Southwest Michigan First | Art Hop Stop

Join Southwest Michigan First as we present Café Momentum’s documentary, Building Momentum.

Art Hop was created as a way for artists, organizations, and businesses to showcase their work and to bring the Kalamazoo community together surrounding a shared love of arts and culture. You don’t have to be an artist to enjoy the spectacular exhibits and events that take place on the first Friday of each month.

On March 4, 2022, join Southwest Michigan First as we present Café Momentum’s documentary, Building Momentum. This story follows founder Chad Houser as he strives to provide wraparound care to youth coming out of the justice system. Chad was a Catalyst University 2022 faculty speaker so his mission might be familiar to you.

Come out to the Southwest Michigan First Catalyst Center to enjoy light refreshments and small bites as we enjoy networking and learning more about the social movements of companies doing amazing work.

WHERE WE AT: Black & Women’s History Exhibit

Presented in partnership with NCA of Michigan, this exhibition pays homage to the “Where We At” legacy and the Black Arts Movement.

OPENING SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2022 – In celebration of both Black and Women’s History Months, Irwin House Global Art Center & Gallery in partnership with the National Conference of Artists of Michigan presents WHERE WE AT – a juried exhibition featuring twenty women artists of the NCA, celebrating the journey of women in the arts, and inspired by the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and ‘70s.

The reception will be an Open House Event, where visitors are encouraged to come see the show and meet the artists throughout the day, from 2pm-7pm. Masks are required in the building.

Featured NCA of Michigan artists include April Anue, Asia Hamilton, Bre’Ann White, Charlene Uresy, Crystal Starks Webb, Dawn Stringer, Deborah Brown-Cage, Donna Jackson, Diane Taylor, Halima Afi Cassells, Ida Hawkins, Kristina Beaty, Joan Britton, Marian Stephens, Nonnie Williams, Olivia Indigo, Priscilla Phifer, Robbie Best, Rita Dickerson, Shekenia Mann, Shirley Woodson Reid, and Stephanie Hill Ross.

Through their work, these women stand in homage to the “Where We At” legacy while revisiting the Black Arts Movement as a whole.

Some of our NCA members were there – on the frontlines of the movement, forging black spaces for our artists to prevail. They, along with local artists of a wide range of media and career-levels, comprise an exhibition that tells a story of where we are at today – as black women creatives – and creates a bridge to the women of our history, many of whom are still telling our stories, knocking down walls, and serving the arts community as sisters, mentors, muses, and friends.

This exhibition and its programs have been supported in part by NASP Detroit. Special thanks to Shirley Woodson Reid and NCA of Michigan for partnering with us on sharing and exploring this bit of Black and Women’s History!
