Artist Bio

Sculptguy (Marion Mason) I am a visual artist who taught high school Art courses for 42 years. I earned the Bachelor of Arts Degree in studio art (sculpture concentration) from the University of South Carolina, and the Master of Fine Arts Degree (in sculpture) from the University of Georgia. In addition, I earned the Master of Education (adult & community education) from Carolina. Prior to my teaching career I served as an officer in the U.S. Navy for 9 years (5 on active duty), and am a veteran of the Vietnam War. I began my 42 year teaching career as the artist-in-residence, and on-site coordinator, at the former Richland District One Artistically Talented and Gifted (ARTAG) High School Program in Columbia, SC. Many years ago I was a member of the design and implementation team of the original Tri-District Arts Consortium (Tri-DAC) program, where I taught sculpture for 15 summers. Also, I had the privilege of teaching three summers in the three week Honors Program at the SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. I have conducted many art workshops for school, district, community, and state-wide groups, from middle schoolers through adults. In 1982 I was awarded Teacher of the Year recognition at C. A. Johnson High School, Columbia, SC, and was also honored as the Richland County School District One Teacher of the Year. I’ve been retired from my 42 year public high school Art teaching career since Jan. 2019. Since retiring from teaching, I am now a full-time professional artist and exhibit and sell my sculpture and pendants. Of course, I also photograph, paint and draw. I have shown and won awards at many local, state, regional, and national competitive and invitational exhibits. www.sculptguy.com www.viewbug.com/member/sculptguy

Artist Statement

I am all about the aesthetics of form. The forms I sculpt are inspired by the forms I see in both nature and in the built environment. I don’t pull those forms out of their environment and simply apply them to my sculpture. Not literally. These formal concepts are deconstructed and manipulated in my mind. Then I consciously and subconsciously create the shapes and forms of my sculpture. I work primarily in the non-objective style. This allows me to be totally unencumbered by expressive content, allowing the viewer the freedom to understand and interpret my sculpture any way they desire. I only desire that my pieces be visually pleasing forms that convey my primary interests: dynamic movement and visual contrasts. If I can make the viewer want to actually touch the sculpture I made, I’ve been successful. I intend that my pieces be sensual (not in the sexual context) and instill a desire for the viewer to caress the form. This includes my “Wearable Sculpture”, my pendants and earrings Yes, I’m a formalist sculptor who cherishes the aesthetics of form. Many of my paintings and drawings are also executed in the non-objective style. I’m also a dedicated photographer who mostly captures objects and scenes in nature that also show dynamic movement and visual contrasts. www.sculptguy.com www.viewbug.com/member/sculptguy 803-231-0747 MARION MASON (SCULPTGUY) Artist’s Statement Form.
